Ancient Methods is the musical project of German DJ and producer Michael Wollenhaupt, known for pioneering a raw, industrial approach to techno. Emerging from Berlin’s storied underground scene in the mid-2000s, Ancient Methods began as a duo with Conrad Protzmann before Wollenhaupt became the sole creative force behind the moniker. Favored for a “pitch black” style of techno that interweaves elements of EBM, post-punk, and noise, Ancient Methods forged a singular sound characterized by punishing, syncopated rhythms, metallic textures, and haunting atmospheres.
Early self-released vinyl on his Ancient Methods label set the tone for a new wave of industrial techno, earning acclaim from both experimental circles and club crowds. Subsequent releases on labels such as Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, Persephonic Sirens, and Hands Productions cemented his reputation as a vanguard of the genre. A prolific remixer and collaborator, Ancient Methods has worked alongside names like Vatican Shadow, Regis, Orphx, Prurient, and Black Egg, consistently pushing the boundaries of techno with bold forays into darkwave, industrial, and even medieval-tinged electronics.
His acclaimed debut album, *The Jericho Records* (2018), expanded his sonic vocabulary further, weaving biblical and historical references into a powerful narrative and immersive musical experience. Noted for high-intensity DJ sets and live performances across renowned clubs and festivals, Ancient Methods continues to evolve as a leading figure in leftfield techno, championing an uncompromising sound that fuses relentless rhythms with a deep sense of atmosphere and historical resonance.
