Chicago-born and based, Hiroko Yamamura is one of the true unsung heroes of the city’s legendary techno and house music underground. Raised in the vibrant rave and warehouse party scene of the Midwest, she has spent decades shaping the soundscape of Chicago, both as a DJ and as a producer. With roots deeply embedded in the Japanese American community, Yamamura’s distinct approach bridges influences from Detroit techno, classic acid, and the infectious energy of Chicago house.
Known for marathon sets at Smartbar, Spybar, and untold after-hours, Yamamura is admired for her technical prowess—seamlessly mixing infectious basslines, raw percussion, and hypnotic synths. She’s headlined renowned festivals like Movement Detroit and ARC Festival, and toured across North America and Europe, sharing stages with legends such as Derrick Carter, The Blessed Madonna, and Nina Kraviz. Her production work, often released on top imprints like HE.
SHE.THEY. and Kompakt, bristles with the unfiltered energy and playful spirit she’s become known for behind the decks.
Beyond her music, Yamamura is celebrated for her witty social media voice and activism in LGBTQ+ and Asian American spaces, inspiring a new generation to find belonging and expression on the dance floor.
