Ross Birchard, better known by his stage name Hudson Mohawke, is a Scottish DJ, producer, and composer celebrated for his genre-defying approach to electronic music. Growing up in Glasgow, Birchard was exposed to diverse musical influences from a young age, developing his skills as a turntablist and producer in the city’s vibrant club scene. He gained early recognition as the youngest-ever finalist in the UK DMC DJ Championships at age 15.
Hudson Mohawke’s career took off after releasing his acclaimed debut album, *Butter* (2009), on Warp Records. The album’s eclectic blend of hip-hop, glitch, and maximalist synth textures positioned him as a pioneer of the emerging “wonky” and “future beats” movements. He continued to push boundaries with solo projects such as *Lantern* (2015) and *Cry Sugar* (2022), all while maintaining a distinctively playful, energetic, and often experimental sound.
In addition to his solo work, Hudson Mohawke found major success as one half of the duo TNGHT with Canadian producer Lunice. Their eponymous 2012 EP is credited with influencing the rise of trap in electronic and mainstream music. As a producer, he has worked with some of the world’s biggest artists, including Kanye West, Drake, A$AP Rocky, and ANOHNI, contributing to ground-breaking albums and singles across genres.
Hudson Mohawke’s unique productions are characterized by bold melodies, intricate drum patterns, and an irreverent approach to sampling and genre fusion. His work continues to challenge conventions, earning him a reputation as one of contemporary music’s most innovative and influential producers.
