Juliana Huxtable is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and performer based in New York, United States. Born in 1987, Huxtable’s practice spans photography, poetry, performance, and installation, and her work often interrogates themes of gender, race, identity, and the digital experience. As a trans woman, Huxtable draws from her lived experiences to challenge conventions and disrupt normative social narratives, using her own body and persona as both subject and medium.
She came to prominence in the 2010s through her involvement with the New York club scene, particularly through her affiliation with the collective House of Ladosha, and became known for her striking self-portraits that combine elements of fantasy, Afro-futurism, and sci-fi aesthetics. Her written work, including the poetry collection “Mucus in My Pineal Gland” (2017), further expands on themes of self-invention and the complexities of navigating identity in contemporary society. Huxtable’s art has been exhibited at major institutions such as the New Museum, MoMA PS1, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and her performances have captivated audiences around the world, contributing to ongoing conversations about the intersections of technology, queerness, and representation.
