Kokoroko

Kokoroko is a dynamic eight-piece collective hailing from London, United Kingdom, celebrated for their innovative fusion of Afrobeat, jazz, and soul. Formed in 2014 and led by trumpeter and composer Sheila Maurice-Grey, the band draws inspiration from the sounds of West Africa—particularly the pioneering Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen—while weaving in the multi-layered jazz sensibilities of the UK’s thriving contemporary scene. Their name, meaning “be strong” in Urhobo, reflects their mission to channel powerful, life-affirming music that pays homage to both their African heritage and London’s vibrant musical mosaic.

Kokoroko’s 2019 self-titled debut EP and subsequent releases on Brownswood Recordings propelled them into global acclaim, with their track “Abusey Junction” amassing millions of streams and resonating deeply with listeners worldwide. Renowned for their high-energy live performances, lush harmonies, and intricate horn arrangements, Kokoroko continues to push the boundaries of genre, celebrating diasporic unity through rhythm, improvisation, and collective spirit.
