Liquid Liquid Profile Image

Liquid Liquid

Liquid Liquid is a pioneering American post-punk and dance-punk band formed in New York City in 1980. Known for their stripped-down, percussive tracks and infectious grooves, the band consisted of Salvatore Principato on vocals and percussion, Dennis Young on marimba and percussion, Richard McGuire on bass, and Scott Hartley on drums. Drawing inspiration from funk, dub, and Afrobeat, Liquid Liquid forged a distinctive sound built around rhythm, repetition, and minimalism, quickly becoming a key part of the early 1980s downtown Manhattan music and club scene.

The group released a handful of influential records on the seminal 99 Records label, including the acclaimed 1983 EP "Optimo," which featured their most famous track, "Cavern." This song was later famously sampled without credit for Grandmaster Melle Mel’s hip-hop classic "White Lines (Don’t Do It)," catalyzing one of the era’s most famous copyright disputes. Though Liquid Liquid originally disbanded in 1984, their innovative approach and raw energy left a lasting mark, influencing generations of artists within dance, punk, hip-hop, and experimental music.

The band has since reunited for occasional performances, helping new audiences discover their enduring and genre-defying sound.
