Louis Harshman is an American visual artist whose work spans painting, installation, and mixed media, exploring the boundaries between abstraction and narrative. Born in 1979 in St. Louis, Missouri, Harshman developed an early fascination with urban space and architectural forms, themes that would become central to his artistic language.
He received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001, followed by an MFA from Yale University later in 2006. Harshman’s compositions are noted for their energetic brushwork, layered surfaces, and incorporation of found objects, often signaling a dialogue between memory, history, and materiality. He has exhibited nationally in venues including the Contemporary Art Museum St.
Louis, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. His work has also been featured in major art publications such as Artforum and Hyperallergic. In addition to his studio practice, Harshman is active as an educator, mentoring young artists and teaching workshops on experimental painting techniques.
He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, continuing to push the boundaries of his practice while engaging critically with the evolving landscape of contemporary art.
