Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser, better known as Mad Professor, is a pioneering Guyanese-British dub music producer and engineer born in 1955 in Georgetown, Guyana. He moved to London as a teenager, where he began to explore electronics and sound engineering, famously building his own mixing desk and early studio equipment. In 1979, he founded the legendary Ariwa Sounds studio and label in South London, which became a creative hub for the burgeoning UK reggae, dub, and lovers rock scenes.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Mad Professor released a series of influential albums, including his famed ‘Dub Me Crazy’ series and collaborations with artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie, Horace Andy, and U-Roy. He helped bring dub into the digital age with atmospheric, experimental sounds, while also remixing tracks for artists outside the reggae world, notably Massive Attack’s entire ‘Protection’ album, retitled ‘No Protection.’ Mad Professor remains an active producer, engineer, and global performer, renowned for his innovative approach, prolific output, and crucial role in evolving dub and electronic music.
