Rhythm & Sound Profile Image

Rhythm & Sound

Rhythm & Sound is a pioneering electronic music duo formed in Berlin by Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. Emerging from the city's influential techno scene in the early 1990s, the pair became renowned for their progressive approach to electronic music production. Prior to Rhythm & Sound, both artists were central figures in Basic Channel, a groundbreaking project that fused minimal techno with dub aesthetics.

With Rhythm & Sound, Von Oswald and Ernestus deepened their exploration of dub’s sonic palette, melding it with stripped-down, hypnotic rhythms. Their music is characterized by cavernous reverb, pulsing basslines, and minimalist arrangements, often featuring collaborations with legendary Jamaican vocalists such as Tikiman (Paul St. Hilaire), Cornell Campbell, and Jennifer Lara.

The duo’s releases on their eponymous Rhythm & Sound label, as well as Burial Mix, have become touchstones in both techno and dub communities. Their influence extends far beyond Germany, shaping the evolution of dub techno worldwide. Despite maintaining a low public profile and releasing only a select number of EPs and albums, Rhythm & Sound is celebrated for their forward-thinking sound design, atmospheric depth, and enduring impact on contemporary electronic music.
