Jesús Rafael Soto (1923–2005) was a pioneering Venezuelan artist celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to kinetic and optical art. Born in Ciudad Bolívar, Soto began his artistic journey at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Aplicadas in Caracas before moving to Paris in 1950, where he immersed himself in the European avant-garde. Best known for his immersive installations and “Penetrables,” Soto’s work explores the dynamic relationship between color, form, and viewer perception, employing repetition, vibration, and movement to dissolve the boundaries between art and spectator.

His innovative approach to space and perception reflected his belief in a participatory and ever-changing reality, making viewers an integral part of his works. Soto’s creations have been exhibited globally, including at prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and his legacy continues to influence generations of artists engaging with kinetic forms and participatory art.
