The xx are an English indie pop band formed in London in 2005. The group comprises Romy Madley Croft (vocals, guitar), Oliver Sim (vocals, bass), and Jamie Smith, known professionally as Jamie xx (beats, MPC, production). The trio met while studying at Elliott School in South West London, quickly bonding over a shared love of minimalist sounds and atmospheric songwriting.
Their debut album, *xx* (2009), garnered widespread critical acclaim for its delicate blend of indie rock, R&B, and electronica, and won the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2010. The xx developed a distinctive, understated style marked by sparse arrangements, intimate lyrics, and haunting dual vocals. Romy and Oliver’s soft, entwined voices, paired with Jamie xx’s innovative production, quickly became the band’s signature sound.
Following their breakthrough, The xx released two more albums: *Coexist* (2012) and *I See You* (2017), each showcasing their maturation as artists and expanding their sonic palette with bolder arrangements and a more pronounced dance influence. The band’s worldwide tours and festival appearances solidified their reputation for emotionally resonant, atmospheric live performances. Beyond the band, Jamie xx has achieved solo success as a DJ and producer, including his acclaimed 2015 album *In Colour*, which further explored his love of UK dance music and electronic production.
Both Romy and Oliver have ventured into solo projects as well, continuing to influence and innovate within the indie and electronic music scenes. The xx remain celebrated for their distinct musical identity, their influence on modern pop and alternative music, and their ability to bridge the gap between indie, electronic, and dance genres.
