INFO

Freight Island is a unique and innovative entertainment venue located in Manchester, United Kingdom. Established in the summer of 2020 amid the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, it rapidly carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting urban nightspots. The venue occupies part of the historic Mayfield Depot, a former railway station and goods yard that dates back to 1894.
This industrial setting serves as the backbone for Freight Island’s distinctive atmosphere, fusing Manchester’s proud heritage with cutting-edge nightlife and culture. Initially conceived as a socially distanced outdoor destination, Freight Island quickly grew in size and ambition, evolving into a sprawling multi-use space featuring several bars, restaurants, creative spaces, and live music stages. Its significance comes not just from its nightlife but from its revitalization of a once-derelict part of central Manchester, helping to transform the Mayfield area into a vibrant social and cultural hub.
Freight Island is celebrated for its inclusive, festival-inspired experience and its support of local food traders, artists, and musicians. Its year-round program of live music, DJ sets, arts events, and family-friendly activities has cemented its place in Manchester’s nightlife and cultural landscape. Over time, while the core location at Mayfield has remained constant, the venue has expanded with additional indoor and outdoor areas, adapting its layout and facilities to accommodate both small-scale gatherings and large-scale events.
This flexibility has allowed Freight Island to remain at the forefront of the city's dynamic social scene, especially as live entertainment returned post-pandemic. Notable artists who have performed at Freight Island include international names like Craig Charles, Gilles Peterson, David Rodigan, Mr. Scruff, Horse Meat Disco, and Norman Jay MBE, as well as renowned local talent such as DJ Paulette, Luke Una, Michelle Manetti, and rising Manchester collective Love Scene.
Bands and acts such as Hot 8 Brass Band, KOG, and Ex-Easter Island Head have also graced its stages, contributing to Freight Island’s spirited and eclectic music programming.
