XOYO is one of
London’s most renowned nightclubs, located in the heart of Shoreditch, an area famed for its vibrant nightlife and cultural diversity. Established in 2010, XOYO quickly ascended to become a staple within the UK’s electronic music scene. The venue is housed in a repurposed industrial space on Cowper Street, and its two-floor layout—complete with a powerful sound system and minimalist, contemporary design—has become emblematic of
London’s modern clubbing aesthetic.
In its early years, XOYO focused on providing a platform for cutting-edge house, techno, drum and bass, and hip-hop acts, attracting a loyal crowd drawn to its consistent commitment to underground music and high-quality programming.
XOYO’s reputation for championing both established and emerging artists has cemented its cultural significance within the UK and beyond. It was among the first
London venues to popularize lengthy DJ residencies, cultivating a sense of community between the audience and resident DJs, some of whom played weeks-long runs that defined particular seasons within the club.
The venue has also shown versatility, hosting queer-friendly events, live music showcases, and daytime parties, reflecting and shaping
London’s evolving nightlife culture. Despite the many changes threatening
London’s club landscape—such as gentrification and increasing regulatory pressures—XOYO has maintained continuity at its original site, with improvements and refurbishments made periodically rather than relocating. The club underwent a significant refurbishment in 2016, enhancing both sound and lighting systems, as well as expanding its lounge areas to better accommodate diverse crowds and event formats.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, XOYO, like many clubs, temporarily closed but successfully reopened, reaffirming its resilience and continued relevance.
Over the years, XOYO has hosted a remarkable roster of notable artists, including international and local talent such as The Blessed Madonna, Bicep, Skream, Ben UFO, Andy C, Heidi, Four Tet, Dixon, Erol Alkan, Fatboy Slim, Sasha, Paul Woolford, Honey Dijon, Groove Armada, Flava D, and Midland. UK-based stars like Annie Mac, Jackmaster, Eats Everything, DJ EZ, and Ms.
Dynamite have graced its decks, as have innovative collectives like Horse Meat Disco and Hospitality. This consistent programming of both global icons and up-and-coming DJs has secured XOYO’s status as a pivotal venue in
London’s ever-changing club scene.
