Battles is an experimental rock band formed in 2002 in New York City, United States. Known for their innovative blend of math rock, electronic, and avant-garde elements, Battles quickly established themselves as sonic pioneers within the independent music landscape. The original lineup featured guitarist and keyboardist Ian Williams (formerly of Don Caballero and Storm and Stress), guitarist and bassist Dave Konopka, drummer John Stanier (formerly of Helmet), and multi-instrumentalist Tyondai Braxton.
Their debut EPs in 2004 drew critical attention, but it was the 2007 release of their full-length album "Mirrored" that catapulted them into international acclaim, thanks in part to the infectious single "Atlas." Characterized by complex rhythms, propulsive drumming, looping electronics, and intricate guitar work, Battles' sound is both cerebral and viscerally exciting. Braxton’s departure in 2010 led the band to focus more deeply on instrumental experimentation, resulting in acclaimed albums like "Gloss Drop" (2011), "La Di Da Di" (2015), and "Juice B Crypts" (2019).
Throughout lineup changes and sonic evolution, Battles has remained at the forefront of genre-defying music, earning a reputation for energetic live performances and a boundary-pushing approach to composition and technology in contemporary rock music.
