Doctor Feelgood is a British pub rock band formed in Canvey Island, Essex, in 1971. Known for their raw, energetic sound and electrifying stage presence, the band quickly became a driving force behind the pub rock movement of the 1970s, paving the way for punk rock’s emergence in the UK. The original line-up featured lead vocalist Lee Brilleaux, masterful guitarist Wilko Johnson, bassist John B.
Sparks, and drummer John Martin, also known as "The Big Figure." Their early work, marked by tight rhythm-and-blues grooves and searing guitar work, garnered widespread acclaim, particularly through albums like "Down by the Jetty" and "Stupidity," the latter of which reached number one on the UK charts. Despite a series of personnel changes—most notably Johnson's departure in 1977 and Brilleaux's untimely death in 1994—Doctor Feelgood has remained an enduring presence in British music, famed for their relentless touring schedule and enduring commitment to high-energy rhythm and blues.
Their influence is widely acknowledged in the development of both punk and new wave music, and their legacy continues through new incarnations of the band dedicated to keeping the spirit of their classic sound alive.
