Function, born David Charles Sumner in Brooklyn, New York, is one of techno’s most influential artists, recognized for his role in shaping the modern sound of the genre. Beginning his career in the early 1990s, Function was an early affiliate of the influential Sandwell District collective, alongside Regis and Silent Servant, pushing forward-thinking techno rooted in the tradition of classic Detroit and Berlin aesthetics while exploring darker, atmospheric, and experimental territories. Emerging as one of the few American producers to record for Berlin’s legendary Ostgut Ton and Tresor labels, Function’s discography includes acclaimed solo albums such as "Incubation," as well as collaborations with Vatican Shadow, Steve Bicknell, and others in the LSD project.
He has performed at top venues and festivals worldwide, including Berghain, fabric, and Movement Detroit, renowned for his precise, hypnotic DJ sets and live performances. As a producer and DJ, Function is celebrated for his rigorous commitment to the core principles of techno — rhythm, futurism, and emotion — while continually expanding its boundaries. His contribution to the development of immersive, cerebral, and driving techno has cemented his reputation as a pivotal figure on both sides of the Atlantic, inspiring new generations of artists and listeners alike.
