Born Steven Julien in West London, FunkinEven emerged as a crucial figure in the UK’s dance music landscape from the late 2000s onwards. With an early foundation in hip hop and street culture, his musical journey traversed genres, integrating elements of funk, acid house, boogie, and raw techno into an instantly recognizable, forward-thinking style. After teaching himself music production, FunkinEven made his mark with a string of releases on Eglo Records and Apron Records—the latter being a respected imprint he founded in 2011.
His studio equipment-heavy approach delivers tracks dense with squelchy synths, punchy drum machines, and infectious grooves, reflected in acclaimed EPs like “Roland’s Jam,” “Phoneline” (with Fatima), and “Cha,” as well as his collaborations with Kyle Hall under the Funkinevil alias. Julien’s music pays homage to the legacy of early electronic pioneers while defiantly carving out its own futuristic identity. A regular at underground parties in London and renowned clubs worldwide, his DJ sets mix rare boogie, mutant house, and electro, channeling the same funk-laden energy as his productions.
Beyond his solo work, he has fostered talent through Apron, nurturing boundary-pushing artists and helping define the sound of modern UK dance music. Now also releasing more personal music under his real name, Steven Julien continues to influence and inspire with creativity rooted in both tradition and innovation.
