Steven Julien, also known under his former alias Funkineven, is a British DJ, producer, and label owner hailing from West London. Raised in a musically rich environment, Julien’s upbringing was soundtracked by jazz, soul, rare groove, and early UK dance styles—formative influences that later shaped his distinctive musical approach. Emerging onto the scene in the late 2000s, he quickly garnered attention with a string of releases for the influential Eglo Records imprint, blending house, funk, electro, and broken beat with raw analogue soul.
In 2012, Julien established his own label, Apron Records, which has since become home to forward-thinking beats and genre-defying artists from around the world. His productions are known for their expressive synth work, syncopated rhythms, and a palpable sense of improvisation. As an artist, he has released acclaimed EPs and albums such as his landmark debut LP "Fallen" (2016), further solidifying his reputation as a fearless innovator in underground electronic music.
Julien’s DJ sets, much like his productions, are celebrated for their eclecticism—seamlessly traversing house, techno, boogie, and experimental sounds, often sprinkled with rare gems and leftfield surprises. His enduring contribution to London’s musical landscape continues to inspire the next generation of producers, as he remains a vital force pushing boundaries in contemporary club music.
