Lu Campbell is a contemporary visual artist whose inventive body of work explores the intersections of memory, nature, and identity through painting, mixed media, and installation. Born in 1983 in New Orleans, Campbell grew up surrounded by the vibrant textures and rhythms of the American South, which continue to inform their use of color and narrative. After earning a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009, Campbell has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across the United States and internationally.
Drawing inspiration from folklore, archival photography, and the peculiarities of everyday life, Campbell’s practice blends figuration and abstraction to evoke both personal history and collective experience. Their work is held in private and public collections, and they have been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. Campbell currently lives and works in New Orleans, where they are actively engaged in community arts projects and teaching.
