Michael Sutton

Michael Sutton is a contemporary visual artist known for his evocative mixed-media paintings and installations that explore memory, place, and the passage of time. Born in 1985 in Boston, Massachusetts, Sutton developed an early interest in both urban and natural landscapes, which remains a central influence in his work. After receiving his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and later completing an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sutton honed a distinctive style that combines abstract mark-making with subtle uses of color and texture.

His work often incorporates found materials and layered surfaces, inviting viewers to consider the histories embedded in everyday objects. Sutton has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, with solo and group exhibitions in venues such as the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the ICA Boston, and Galleri Format in Oslo.

His art can be found in both public and private collections, and he is the recipient of several grants and residencies, including from the MacDowell Colony and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Sutton currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, where he continues to develop projects that reflect on the intersections between personal reminiscence and collective experience.
